Project Description
Client: MICHAELS DEVELOPMENT
Location: LOS ANGELES, CA
Jordan Downs Freedom Tree Park is a newly completed public park located in the heart of the Jordan Downs redevelopment area in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles. Developed by The Michaels Organization in partnership with the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA), this thoughtfully designed 1.25-acre park honors the historic “Freedom Tree” and serves as a vibrant, nature-rich gathering place for the community.
The park integrates interactive and sustainable landscape elements that reflect local culture and promote wellness. Amenities include natural play structures made from wood and stone, water play features, open lawn areas, native planting beds, educational signage, and shaded seating spaces. Over 35 new trees and more than 100 drought-tolerant plants enhance biodiversity and create a green, welcoming environment for residents of all ages.
As a gateway into the larger Jordan Downs Urban Village, the Freedom Tree Park complements the adjacent Century Gateway Park, contributing to a network of more than 1.8 acres of contiguous community-focused open space.
